We had bad thunderstorms and the next morning woke up to this. I thought lightning had struck it, but we never heard that and surely we would have since it was RIGHT outside my bedroom!

Ouch.
Our walnut tree was hit by lightning, and we didn't even know it! It wasn't until our neighbor mentioned it a few days later (he saw it happen) that we found out.
